Craft beer in the Carolinas—River Rat Brewery

Updated: Jul 23, 2020

Not even an hour from our little yellow store is a not-so-little monument to the enjoyment of friends, sunshine, and solidly-made, boldly flavored #craftbeer

Erin and I started our life and family  together in Columbia. From 2012 to 2019, it was our home, and we tried more than a few local brews. But it wasn't until River Rat arrived on the scene that the bar was raised.

If you do things the best way with the best ingredients, it’s hard not to have a pretty stellar product

Founded in 2013 by Mike Tourville (former owner of the late, great Four Moons restaurant in Orangeburg), River Rat is centered around a basic guiding principle: if you do things the best way with the best ingredients, it’s hard not to have a pretty stellar product. With that in mind, Mike hired his brewmaster from the venerable Abita Brewing in Louisiana, supplied him with a world class facility, and only the best brewing ingredients.

The result has been an ever-evolving lineup of solid, classically-styled, and affordable brews that have attracted a sizable following throughout the Southeast. We’re always switching up our selection of River Rat products, but James stays pretty particular to the classic Red Ale. Erin is a fan of their seasonal selection and is digging the Twisted Lemon Wheat Beer. While we get ready to open our doors, we definitely suggest planning a day trip down to ColaTown soon to visit their sprawling brewery and restaurant. Then come on in to see what we have in stock!
